ALBIN JAMES NELSON is a registered patent attorney and shareholder of Schwegman, Lundberg & Woessner. He is SLW's director of the Schwegman Institute which produces the monthly SLW teleseminar series about IP practice, broadcast over the internet. Dr. Nelson's practice focuses on litigation counseling and opinions in addition to chemical, pharmaceutical and biotechnology patent practice. Dr. Nelson's counseling and patent practice ranges from complex (non)infringement and (in)validity opinion and adversarial matters to the direction of preparation and prosecution of patent applications and the prosecution of complex reissue/reexamination/interference/opposition matters. Dr. Nelson received his B.S., honors in chemistry, cum laude, University of Iowa (1968), his Ph.D. in organic and biochemistry from the Iowa State University (1972, NASA Fellow, Phi Kappa Phi) and his J.D. from Fordham University (1980; Fordham Law Review). Dr. Nelson was a patent agent/attorney with Pfizer (1976-1980), an associate/counsel with Kenyon and Kenyon (1980-1988), and equity partner and chairperson of the General IP Practice Group with Merchant & Gould (1988-1999). Dr. Nelson has represented life science companies and Universities such as Pharmacia, Deltec, Novartis, Diversa, Valspar, Restoragen, Smith Industries, NIH, The Scripps Research Institute, Atrix Laboratories, QLT, Inc., University of Minnesota and University of Iowa. Dr. Nelson has presented extensive seminars on IP prosecution and opinion practice at conferences and organizations such as American Intellectual Property Law Association, Minnesota Intellectual Property Law Association, Minnesota Institute of Legal Education, American University Technology Managers Association, The Cosmetic Society, and The Fresenius Institute of Biotechnology (Germany). Dr. Nelson is a member of the Minnesota State Bar, 1989; New York State Bar, 1980; U.S. Patent Bar, 1976; and the U.S. District Court Bar, Minnesota, 1994.
