  • Jim Nelson, Gary Speier, Myung-Gon Hong, and Edward Sandor presented on the topics of Freedom-to-Operate and Reexamination at a number of on-site seminars in Korea from November 14-20, 2010. They also presented a 4 hour seminar on Freedom-to-Operate and the new U.S. BioSimilars Law at the Korean Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology Association annual meeting.
  • Steve Lundberg, Brad Forrest, and Gary Speier presented on Freedom-to-Operate at a number of on-site seminars in Japan from November 7-13, 2010.
  • Jim Nelson, Gary Speier, and Jim Hallenbeck presented on the topics of Freedom-To-Operate and Reexamination at the annual Iowa Patent Law Association meeting held October 15-16, 2010.
  • Steve Lundberg and Tim Bianchi spoke on October 14th at the 24th Annual Minnesota Venture & Finance Conference on Intellectual Property and Financing.
  • Warren Woessner spoke at the AIPLA Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C. His topic, "KSR and the Ripple Effect: Examining the Broad and Increasing Impact of KSR on Patent Litigation and Practice" was given on October 21st at 9 a.m.
  • Suneel Arora was part of a panel at LifeScience Alley's event "Commercializing New Technology, Begin with the End in Mind" on October 27, 2010.
  • In July 2010, Gary Speier and Jim Nelson presented at the Marcus Evans symposium in Washington D.C.  Their seminar topics included Freedom-to-Operate and Orange Book.

  • Ann McCrackin presented at the PLI's Advanced Patent Prosecution Workshop in New York City on July 24-25, 2008. This is the third time that she has presented at this workshop.
  • The following were named Minnesota "Super Lawyers" in the August 2008 issue of Twin Cities Business Monthly: Tim Bianchi, Eduardo Drake, Brad Forrest, Steve Lundberg, Micheal Schwegman, and Warren Woessner. "Super Lawyers" are the top 5 percent of attorneys in each state, as chosen by their peers and through independent research done by Law and Politics magazine.

  • Warren Woessner will be speaking on patent strategies for stem cell technology at the AUTM Regional Meeting in Boston on July 23.

  • Warren Woessner spoke at the ACI program "Pharma/Biotech Claim Drafting & Prosecution" in New York on February 25, 2008.
  • Warren Woessner was part of a panel of licensing experts judging the new quiz show "Analyze That Contract!" at the AUTM Annual Meeting in San Diego, CA on February 29th and March 1st, 2008.
  • Dan Kluth, one of our founding shareholders, has retired. We appreciate everything Dan has done to help our firm grow and wish him all the best in the future. With Dan's retirement comes a change - our firm name is now Schwegman, Lundberg & Woessner, P.A. Our addresses and phone numbers will stay the same.
  • Ann McCrackin co-authored a chapter in the following book: Intellectual Property Management in Health and Agricultural Innovation: A Handbook of Best Practices. The book is a result of a collaboration between the Centre for the Management of Intellectual Property in Health Research & Development (MIHR) and the Public Intellectual Property Resource for Agriculture (PIPRA) and was showcased during a press conference at the BIO convention in Boston on May 6th. The book is just over 2000 pages with two volumes and 157 chapters. Ann's chapter in the book is "A Guide to International Patent Protection."
  • Warren Woessner has been invited to become a Fellow of the American Intellectual Property Law Association. The Fellows provide counsel to the Board of Directors in scholarly, educational and research matters, and support scholarships and other honoraria for contributions to intellectual property law as authorized by the Board.
  • According to the USPTO, SLW was the first law firm to file a real patent application using the USPTO's new web-based e-filing system. The new system is fast and easy to use, and filings are not limited to patent applications, but also include almost everything that is routinely filed.
  • Warren Woessner spoke on claim construction at the C5 Conference: "Freedom to Operate" in London on July 5, 2006.
  • SLW was an exhibitor as part of the Minnesota delegation at the BIO International Conference in Chicago, April 9-12th, 2006.
  • Tim Bianchi presented at the Midwest IP Institute (Minneapolis, MN) on September 25, 2006. He spoke on the topic of Prosecution in View of Litigation.

  • Tim Bianchi was asked to be on a panel at a continuing legal education series at Loyola Law School (Los Angeles, CA) concerning inventorship and related issues. The CLE took place on September 15, 2006.
  • Tom Brennan was a featured speaker at the MIPLA Stampede on May 8, 2006. His talk addressed the changes in continuation practice proposed by the US Patent and Trademark Office and thier effect on patent practice.
  • Gary Speier spoke on "Ensuring Ownership of your Intellectual Property: Working with Consultants, Employees and Joint Developers," at the Licensing Executives Society (LES) Annual Meeting in Phoenix, AZ, on October 18, 2005.

  • Suneel Arora spoke at a Minnesota CLE seminar on IP in Complex Corporate Transactions on May 18, 2005. His portion of the CLE will address Product Clearance and Non-Infringement Opinions.
  • Andre Marais was a featured speaker at the Law Seminars International's workshop entitled "Patent Law for Non-Patent Lawyers and Business Professionals" on April 6, 2005 in San Francisco, CA. His seminar was entitled "Patent Prosecution 101" and was an overview of types of patents, obtaining patent protection, elements of a patent application, and patent prosecution procedures.
  • Warren Woessner spoke on "Written Description Requirement - Strategies for Success in the Patent Office" on a panel on Claim Scope and Interpretation Issues at the BIO International Conference in Philadelphia on June 21, 2005. The firm was also an exhibitor and the conference as part of the Minnesota booth.
  • Suneel Arora spoke on the "Servicing the Global Customer" panel at TiE's TiEcon 2005 in Santa Clara, CA, May 13 & 14th. Some of the prominent speakers at this TiEcon included Dr. Eric Schmidt, CEO of Google; Bruce Chizen, CEO of Adobe Systems; and Daniel Rosenweig, CEO of Yahoo!
  • Warren Woessner spoke on "Research Tools - Fight or Flight" at the AIPLA Spring Meeting on May 11, 2005, as a participant in the educational track--"What's New in Biotech/Pharma Patent Law and Policy."
  • Warren Woessner was part of a panel discussing the experimental use exceptions to patent infringement at the AUTM Central Region Meeting in Detroit on July 19, 2005.
  • National Survey Ranks Minneapolis Patent Law Firm Schwegman, Lundberg & Woessner Ranked #1 in Patent Quality. A survey of patent quality published in the March 2005 issue of IP Law & Business showed that Minneapolis-based intellectual property law firm Schwegman, Lundberg & Woessner (SLW) ranked in the top three for four of six categories of technology including Biotech, Electrical, Chemical, Computer/Software, and Medical.   • An article by Warren Woessner, "Claiming Metabolites: Federal Circuit Poses New Challenges to Patent Applicants," has been published in the September 2004 issue of Patent Strategy & Management (Law Journal Newsletters).
  • The firm is proud to announce that Bradley Forrest has been named 2005-2007 Vice President of the Electronic and Computer Law Committee and Warren Woessner has been named Chair of the Biotechnology Committee of the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA).
  • At the AIPLA Annual Meeting in October 2005, Warren Woessner was appointed to the Amicus Comittee.
  • Janal Kalis was nominated as one of the "Women Changemakers" in The Business Journal's insert Women in Business (July 2003). The nominees are women who have made changes in their businesses, industries, or the Twin Cities business community. Ms. Kalis has helped develop and commercialize a web-based case management system for patent and trademark attorneys and launch a company called FoundationIP.
  • Steve Lundberg was nominated as a 2003 "Innovator of the Year", by the Twin Cities business newspaper, Finance and Commerce. Mr. Lundberg created a completely new approach to the practice of law by originating the core concepts of a web-based document management system, now known as FoundationIP. All nominees will be recognized at a special luncheon on September 5, 2003.
  • Warren Woessner's article "'Do Over!' - The Federal Circuit Takes a Second Look at Enzo v. Gen-Probe" was published in the April 2003 issue of the Journal of the Patent and Trademark Office Society.
    The 1999 settlement of University of Minnesota v. Glaxo is listed as the sixth largest patent litigation settlement "of all time" at $300 million in the February 2003 issue of Intellectual Property Today. This lawsuit involved a series of patents on anti-HIV drugs written and prosecuted by Warren Woessner, who also took part in the mediation process
