

Greg Gorrie Is SLW’s Newest Shareholder
Schwegman, Lundberg & Woessner is pleased to announce that Greg Gorrie has been made a shareholder of SLW. Greg started with SLW in May of 2001 and is a satellite attorney located in Arizona. Greg’s practice focuses on broadband and wireless communications, microwave and radar technology, satellite systems, IP networks, cryptographic and secure systems, military and government technology, software, and semiconductors.
Bradley Scheer Speaking at UC Merced
Bradley Scheer will be presenting for the School of Engineering graduating class at UC Merced on Februrary 17. The presentation will include an overview of IP law with a particular focus on patents.
Suneel Arora Speaking at Medical Device Patents Summit
Shareholder Suneel Arora will be speaking at the American Conference Institute’s Advanced Summit on Medical Device Patents. The Summit will be held February 28-29, 2012 in Boston, MA. Suneel will be speaking at the pre-conference workshop in February 27 on “The 510(k) Process and Patentability: Reformulating Patent Strategies in Light of Changes in the Regulatory Approval Process.” The session will give a 360° view of the interplay between FDA and PTO claims and help to put participants in the best position to protect their IP and market share.
Kevin Greenleaf Joins SLW, Further Building SLW’s Reexamination Expertise
Kevin Greenleaf has joined SLW as a satellite associate patent attorney and an experienced member of our reexamination team. In addition to reexamination, Kevin’s practice includes patent procurement and post-grant review, portfolio analysis, technical analysis, and strategic counseling, with emphasis on computer architecture, software, circuit design, semiconductors, and microelectronic fabrication. In addition to several years experience at a Washington, D.C. area law firm, Kevin has several years of combined legal and technical experience at Intel Corporation, including as a Senior Component Design Engineer.
Lissi Mojica Joins SLW’s Reexamination Team
Lissi Mojica has joined SLW as an officer and leading member of its reexamination team. Lissi is considered to be among the world’s foremost experts in reexamination procedures. Lissi helped establish the Central Reexamination Unit (CRU) of the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and served as its first-ever director. Under Lissi’s direction, the USPTO experienced unprecedented use of the reexamination process. Lissi is experienced with interferences in the USPTO and was in charge of setting policies, standards, and procedures and developing Inter Partes and Ex Parte Reexamination training for CRU examiners. Additionally, she spearheaded many important Manual of Patent Examining Procedures (MPEP) revisions, implemented rule changes, and reviewed and ruled on petitions regarding reexamination. Before joining SLW, Lissi was a senior advisor and Associate Chair for the Post Grant Law/Patent Reexamination Practice Group of a Washington, D.C. patent law firm.

Mike Lynch’s Upcoming Speaking Engagements
On January 18, 2012 Mike Lynch will be moderating a panel discussion on “Post Grant Review– Implications and Strategies for In-house Counsel” at the Association of Corporate Patent Counsel, Winter meeting. Luke Dohmen of BSC has accepted to be a panelist, along with Bob Stoll.
On February 24, 2012 Mike will be a panelist at a symposium sponsored by Case Western Reserve University on “The Role of Non-Practicing Entities in the Modern Patent System: A Debate.”

Tim Bianchi Speaks at MSBA CLE

Warren Woessner To Be A Panelist at AIPLA Annual Meeting
Warren Woessner, one of SLW’s founding shareholders, was a panelist at the AIPLA 2011 Annual Meeting on October 22, 2011. He was a member of the Patent Prosecutors Team in the new game show “Patent Wars – Prosecutors v. Litigators.” The Annual Meeting will be held in Washington, D.C.
Robin Chadwick Speaking at USPTO/AIPLA Program
Robin Chadwick, a shareholder of SLW, spoke at the 2011 Partnering in Patents program at the USPTO on October 19, 2011. Robin spoke on “Therasense from the Patent Bar Perspective.” For the last two years, AIPLA and the USPTO have held a joint focus session to solicit feedback from both patent practitioners and examiners on ways to improve interview practice. AIPLA and the USPTO continue this cooperative effort by holding another focus session this year that will look at ways to expedite prosecution in the USPTO.

Prior to joining SLW, Tyler worked in the medical device space for nearly twelve years at Boston Scientific Corporation and Guidant Corporation. His practice is focused on representing companies and investors on intellectual property and transactional matters, including patent portfolio strategy and development, freedom-to-operate and patent landscaping studies, due diligence and counseling in connection with acquisitions and divestitures, patent validity and infringement opinions, licensing and other technology transactions, patent reexaminations, and patent enforcement and litigation strategies.
SLW Attorneys Publish Paper on Beauregard Claims
SLW attorneys Suneel Arora and Greg Stark, along with William Mitchell law student Ryan Sharp, published “Can Beauregard Claims Show You the Money?” in the Cybaris Intellectual Property Law Review of William Mitchell College of Law. The article explores the potential pitfalls of using certain claim types for protection of computerized systems or devices that included functionality enabled software. Thirteen SLW Attorneys Named Top Prosecutors
Patent Buddy®, a social network for patent lawyers and patent agents has named 13 of SLW’s attorneys as Top Prosecutors: Suneel Arora, Marv Beekman, Tim Bianchi, Nathan Elder, Jan Embretson, Brad Forrest, Janal Kalis, Steve Lundberg, Andre Marais, Mark Muller, Gary Speier, Garth Vivier, and Warren Woessner. This selection was done in cooperation with the Patent Research Review, a publication of Sunlight Research. Out of approximately 30,000 registered patent attorneys, less than 2% were selected as Top Patent Prosecutors.
Ann McCrackin Was Part of the USPTO Global IP Academy
Ann McCrackin gave a presentation on patent prosecution at the USPTO in May. It was a program on Advanced Patents Program: Computer-Implemented Inventions that was part of the PTO’s Global Intellectual Property Academy that was held May 9-12, 2011 at the USPTO offices in Alexandria, Virginia. Some of the other topics at the Academy included Patent Reform 2011, Computer-Implemented Inventions, Reexamination, and Advanced Novelty Analysis.
Jim Nelson Presented at Pharmacutical Conference
SLW Shareholder Jim Nelson spoke at the 10th Annual Forum on Pharma Patent Lifecycles being held June 21 and 22, 2011 in the United Kingdom.
