Nicholas P. Lanzatella is a registered patent attorney whose work involves chemical engineering, materials science, and organic chemistry. He earned a B.S. in chemical engineering and an M.S. in organic chemistry from the University of Minnesota. He then earned a law degree from William Mitchell College of Law, and a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the University of Minnesota. Nicholas explains, “I sought and obtained my Ph.D. after I went to law school and passed the bar. This gave me the opportunity to hone my skills in chemistry, laboratory work, and scientific writing with the mindset of an attorney.” After finishing his Ph.D., Nicholas worked as a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Minnesota. He then joined Schwegman, Lundberg & Woessner.

Nicholas has a talent for efficiently analyzing complex problems and assessing the way to move forward. He describes, “I love my job, and every day I enjoy working on solving the problems presented to me. The joy I feel for my work comes through in my work product in the form of thoroughness in content and organization, deep understanding of the subject matter, and dedication to achieving a result in a timely fashion.”

Nicholas’ experience as a patent attorney includes adhesives and resins, agricultural chemistry, asphalt chemistry, chemical processing, cosmetics, drug delivery systems, energy technologies films and membranes, food chemistry, medical devices, materials science, nanotechnology, silicon chemistry, paints, plastics, polymer science, protective coatings, soaps, and water purification.

“My combined chemistry and engineering background gives me a practical engineering perspective on chemical features in inventions, such as chemical or physical properties, or methods of making materials,” Nicholas explains.

He is an author of several peer-reviewed scientific publications. His professional association memberships include the American Chemical Society (ACS), the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA), and the Minnesota Intellectual Property Law Association (MIPLA).

Outside of the office, Nicholas enjoys spending time with his five children, playing piano, running, biking, hiking, reading, doing crossword puzzles, and juggling.
