What Comes Next: SAGE, ATLAS, and the Prosecution Operating System

Take the individual tools out of view for a moment. What SLW Labs is really building is a single layer the firm practices on top of. Here is where it goes next.

A Legal Patent Prosecution Operating System

For most of this series we have introduced tools one at a time. ARTY. SimProf. SILO. Each with its own article. That is the honest way to introduce them, and it is also a little misleading, because it is not how they are meant to work. The point was never a drawer full of separate products. The point is a single layer the firm practices on top of, and it is worth saying out loud where that layer is going.

Call it the prosecution operating system. The phrase is a stretch if you take it too literally, so take it loosely: a common foundation that knows what a matter is, a set of tools that do real work on top of that foundation, and a governance posture that holds across all of it. Most of the pieces already exist or are being built. What is new is the decision to treat them as one thing rather than a shelf of point solutions.

Legal AI Platform, not Point Solutions

It is worth saying what the operating-system idea is not. It is not a single monolith that does everything, and it is not an argument that software runs a patent practice. It is a modest claim that the tools should share a foundation and a set of rules, so using one does not mean fighting another. Firms that buy point solutions one at a time tend to end up with the opposite, a drawer of products that each assume they are the center of the world and none of which quite agree on what a matter is.

The Portfolio Roadmap

ARTY, the drafting and review platform, is in production, and so is the IDS reference review tool built inside Labs. SimProf, the prosecution training simulator, has launched and ran with this summer’s intern cohort. SIDA, which streamlines invention disclosure, is in development. Feedback from that first cohort has already set the next priority: mapping the simulator’s exercises more closely to the in-person training interns receive alongside it. Three more are in planning, named and scoped and assigned to owners rather than floated as ideas: SAGE, ATLAS, and SILO.

SAGE is the Strategic Advisory and Guidance Engine. The problem it goes after is familiar to anyone who has managed a large portfolio: the strategy lives in a few people’s heads, and it does not travel well. An attorney working one matter cannot hold the whole portfolio’s history in mind, and should not have to. SAGE is meant to bring portfolio-level context to the point of decision, so the strategy shows up where the work happens, regardless of which AI platform the attorney is using.

For example, an associate is deciding how to answer a rejection on one application, and the right move depends on positions the firm took in two sibling cases and a licensing posture the client set two years ago. Today that context arrives only if the right senior person happens to be in the room. SAGE is the attempt to make it arrive every time, at the moment of the decision, instead of depending on who is free that afternoon.

ATLAS Client Prosecution Patent Portal 

There is a concern in the profession right now that AI will erode the apprenticeship path. The traditional way new patent professionals learn the craft, through hundreds of cycles of draft, mark-up, draft, mark-up, is being compressed. The first-paATLAS turns outward. It is a client portfolio portal, built to give in-house counsel visibility into their own prosecution rather than waiting on a status email. In-house teams have asked for this for years. The interesting design question is not the dashboard. It is how much the firm is willing to open up, and the answer we like is: more than most firms are comfortable with.

ATLAS is also where a couple of earlier experiments are likely to land. SIDA, the invention-disclosure tool now in development, solves a problem that really belongs to the client’s side of the relationship, so it may end up living inside ATLAS rather than standing alone. That kind of consolidation is a feature of how Labs works, not a sign of indecision. Tools earn their place, merge when merging serves the user and get retired when they do not.

SILO and the Patent Prosecution Technology Layer

SILO is the layer beneath the rest: a system that knows what a matter is, governed so a client’s documents stay where they belong. The other SLW Labs tools are only as trustworthy as the ground they stand on, which is why the document layer came first in the planning even though it is the least visible of SAGE, ATLAS, and SILO.

Put together, none of this is about doing patent work faster, and the firm has been deliberate on that point for a year. It is about putting attorney judgment at the center and building everything else to serve it. The tools handle the scaffolding. The strategy, the claim architecture, the relationships with inventors and clients, the calls that decide whether a portfolio holds up years later, stay with the people. That is the whole thesis of SLW Labs, and the operating-system framing is only the thesis taken to its conclusion.

One clarification is worth making here, because it comes up. Not everything in the firm’s AI stack is built in-house, and the distinction matters. ARTY is the firm’s own. OTTO IP is licensed through SLW’s strategic partnership with Black Hills AI (BHAI), and OTTO Hub is the BHAI data platform that feeds high-quality United States and international patent data into ARTY. Built and licensed can sit side by side. The point of SLW Labs is that the firm controls the parts that touch client judgment and client data most directly.

Where Does this Go?

Toward a firm that practices infrastructure it understands and controls, with attorneys spending more of their time on the work only attorneys can do. That is the destination.
