Overview

Dr. David VanVliet is a Senior Attorney who works with clients in the chemical and biological sciences in all aspects of patent law, including, but not limited to, patent drafting and prosecution (US and international), patent portfolio development and management, patent due diligence, freedom to operate opinions, noninfringement opinions and invalidity opinions. His work often involves the intersection of foreign and domestic patent laws and how their intersection can affect patent rights in the different jurisdictions.

Prior to joining SLW, Dr. VanVliet practiced law with an IP boutique in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and a large general services firm in St. Louis, Missouri. He was a pharmaceutical research scientist prior to law school, working on the development of therapeutic agents in the areas of inflammation, cancer and antiviral agents. He also taught high school and college level chemistry.

Dr. VanVliet has published multiple peer-reviewed papers connected to both his scientific and legal endeavors. Because of his scientific background, his work looks closely at the intersection of science and law and how it affects his clients and the courts.
